Depth Coaching
““For here lies a paradoxical secret of the soul: That which seems to have twisted your life or personality for the worst is the very thing that will heal you and give you meaning.””
Discover Depth Coaching
Depth Coaching is based on Depth Psychology, a transformative approach to understanding the human psyche pioneered by C.G. Jung, and post-Jungians (I am most influenced by James Hillman, Sharon Blackie and Thomas Moore). This unique perspective invites you to delve into the rich and multifaceted landscape of the soul, offering a fresh and profound way to navigate your inner world.
What is Depth Psychology?
Depth psychology emphasizes the importance of images, myths, and archetypes in shaping our psychological experiences. It moves beyond conventional therapy's focus on pathologies, instead seeking to understand the deeper symbolic meanings and archetypal patterns that influence our lives.
A Depth Psychological perspective offers the opportunity to:
Engage with the psyche and the imaginal language in which it speaks. The psyche offers access to the deeper wisdom and intelligence of our inner world.
Recognize and honor the diverse and often conflicting archetypes that inhabit your inner landscape.
Place the soul at the heart of your psychological journey. Understand symptoms and disorders as meaningful expressions of the soul’s condition.
Use myths and stories as powerful tools for understanding and transforming our psychological experiences. Myths and stories provide a framework for interpreting the archetypal dimensions of life.
Move beyond labeling and fixing. Explore the symbolic meanings behind your experiences and symptoms.
Explore the Mundus Imaginalis, a realm that is accessed through myths, dreams, and archetypal images, which is crucial to understanding and nurturing the soul.
Balance the modern quest for self-actualization with an appreciation for the darker, more complex aspects of the psyche.
Engage deeply with your psyche through imaginative exploration, dream work and creative expression.
Understand your personal experiences within the broader cultural and historical narratives that shape our collective psyche.
Why Choose Depth Psychology?
This approach offers a profound way to enrich your psychological journey, helping you to connect with the deeper currents of your soul. Whether you're seeking personal growth, creative inspiration, or a new perspective on your life challenges, Depth Psychology provides the tools to unlock your inner potential and discover the myths that shape your reality.
Why Coaching?
The term “coach” is derived from the Hungarian word “kocsi,” which means “wagon” or “carriage.” The name comes from the village of Kocs in Hungary, where such carriages were first made. The word “kocsi” entered the English language in the 16th century as “coach.” Initially, a “coach” referred to a horse-drawn vehicle used for transporting people from one place to another. By the 18th century, the term was used in the context of transporting people in various forms of conveyance, including stagecoaches and railway coaches.
Likewise, I see coaching as a journey, guiding a person from one point to another, helping them stay on course (or helping them chart a new course if needed), and providing direction when they reach a crossroads. I bring all of my training and expertise as a Licensed Professional Counselor for 25 years to each coaching session.
Depth coaching is different than therapy. Although I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have worked in this capacity for over 20 years, the lens a therapist looks through is different than that of a coach, even though I bring all my training and expertise as an LPC to each coaching session. A typical way a therapist works is to do an intake session (or two) to gather information about the person so that a diagnosis can be made. Then, a treatment plan is created to eliminate the person’s symptoms. Through the lens of Depth Coaching, however, rather than “what is wrong with this person and how do we fix it?” the question becomes, “How and why is this person’s soul moving in this particular way? What is the soul asking for in this?”
